Elegant Bridal Gown Petticoats Tips & Best Buys
Give your wedding gown a beautiful full shape with a light weight petticoat skirt which can be worn under your gown like a slip. You can buy a petticoat or make your own (see link to patterns below). Petticoats were traditionally worn during the 18th century when they were worn to provide warmth and shape to the long dresses of that era. Petticoats come in various styles and lengths and are most commonly worn under wedding dresses, prom dresses, and costume dresses. Popular styles are the bell shape (most often used for wedding and prom dresses), A-line shape (popular under square dancing skirts). Trumpet and Mermaid are unique shaped petticoats. For the fullest looking skirt you should get a petticoat with 1 hoop or 3 hoops. Not sure of which style petticoat you need? See our featured video below.

Wanting to Make Your Own Petticoat? It's Easy!
Making a petticoat is quite easy to do. It is made of two layers and has three tiers. The bottom tiers are gathered but the top tier is not. The waistline should be elastic. The best fabrics to use when sewing a petticoat is organza or chiffon. Tulle was a very popular fabric for petticoats worn under wedding dresses which would only be worn one time but it is not recommended for a petticoat you plan to wear more than once because "Tulle will become flabby and soft after the first washing" (2).
